Microsoft, the world's best-selling computer program manufacturer, is charged with hiding a secret anti-Semitic message apparently urging death to Jews in it's popular Wingding font.

Typing the letters NYC using the Webdings font in Microsoft Word (or similar application) produces, as shown above, an image of an eye, a heart, and a city skyline, which some people read as "I love New York".

It would make sense that this symbology was intentional, and not merely coincidental. Furthermore, when you switch to the WingDings font, "NYC" produces a pictogram of a skull and crossbones, a Star of David, and a thumbs-up symbol, read by some conspiracy-minded folks as a symbolic approval of the killing of Jews.

According to a 1992 New York Post article, a computer consultant discovered the diabolic message while installing Microsoft's Windows 3.1 software for a client, and when testing the fonts he noticed the letters "NYC" had been replaced by the hateful message - a skull and crossbones, the Star of David and an approving thumbs-up symbol.

Predictably, a senior Microsoft spokesman strongly denied any hidden message, and shifted responsibility to the designers Bigelow and Holmes, outside vendors, and denied that Microsoft intentionally designed the secret message, in a message of pure double-speak;

"It's like saying that if you randomly type out characters on a keyboard to spell 'Satan', you can do that, but it's incredible to say that there's anti-Semitism in Microsoft or one of its vendors," said Charles Hemingway.

Prof. Charles Bigelow confirmed that his company created the symbols, but argued that Microsoft made the final "mapping" decisions deciding which fonts would be placed with which keys on the keyboard.

It is also rumored that the Bush administration has dropped the demand that Microsoft be broken up, conditioned by a deal that Microsoft must enable the government to monitor the activities of Microsoft users who use their technology.

In reference to this article, there are more than one hate message in the Wingdings font. I discovered the other two years ago, but it's never been covered by the media. I just finished a page today which has pictures of the other two hate messages, that are included with the NYC thing. One is a hate message against Turkish people in Germany.
