What's that buzzing in your brain?
Is it possible that other peoples of the world simply have less faith in the competence of their governments, or is it possible that American nature is more inquisitive, thus empowering and encouraging us to discover the deeper meaning behind events? Either way, many truths no doubt exist and it is our duty as human beings to strive for accountability, transparency and honesty by filtering these relative truths through our own gauze of common sense. This issue of Think focuses on conspiracies, not necessarily because we all buy every word of it, but because we feel it is important to keep questioning what we are told. I personally believe that a secret is no longer a secret if more than one person knows about it and, having grown up in the Virginia suburbs of Washington D. C., one of the most gossipy, interconnected regions of the country, I believe that this suspicion is pretty close to correct. While reading through some of the material for this month's issue, however, I was reminded of something that happened to me while visiting my family after a few years away from home. A tiny bit of background that you've probably heard a thousand variations on: I was a typical teen-age f*ck-up. Me and my friend Ken used to leave our respective houses shortly after Mom and Dad fell asleep, roaming the night in his '74 Honda civic wagon. One of our favorite games was "lawn driving", where we'd pull quietly up on a spacious green then honk the horn and yell out the open windows while peeling off across as many lawns as possible before hitting a small tree or fence. Odd moments of silence followed when all was peace and tranquility save for an odd, electrical hum, which seemed to occupy all the air around us. "It's the CIA," I used to joke, "sending off their 'go to sleep, wake up early, work and be productive' beam." So I found myself, years later, sitting on the porch of my parent's house, smoking a cigarette and watching the end of a fierce electrical storm blow away into the night. It was late - the solitude of the place at that hour, when all the cars are parked and phones are silenced always cleared my head and probably always will. Suddenly a huge burst of lightning struck about a mile away, knocking out the power grid. Awed, I stared out at the clearing sky, thinking about nothing in particular until I noticed that the persistent, omnipresent buzzing sensation I'd always associated with streetlamps was just as plain as ever. I say sensation because, in that second of clarity after a strong electric event, one's senses are heightened to distinguish more readily between sound and sensation, between scent and taste - we become truly aware as our senses rush to confirm that we are still alive. Mike, the Australian, and I were discussing the events of September 11, just like three-quarters of the population of the free world at that time. His conspiracy theory remark was a response to my suggestion that Russia and China both would be only too happy to see America come in and "clean up" trouble spots in Central Asia. I had, in fact, been planning a trip through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan for the month of September to collect information and report on just such a possibility. The trip was cancelled long before the attack due to circumstances outside of my control, and my trip through Turkey turned out to be much better than I ever could have imagined - on the isolated beach where we all sat and shared conversation there was no other sound but the crashing of the surf.

"You Americans are obsessed with conspiracies," Mike, an Australian I met travelling last week, laughed.
