Of the billions upon billions of pages of paper wasted on where one fat man puts his 'schmitty' into some blabbermouth creampuff, you won't read about the contemporary genius and his grand new idea.

Upon return from his yoga meeting, and regular thimble of chamomile, Neil Stephenson came up with a plan to keep us all safe, finally.

Using cameras of course, Neil thought it would just be perfect if someone who was awake across the globe could help to police your street while you are sleeping.

Of course you would be entitled to return the favor, keeping your third eye on the video image of your fellow watchdogs' street, in Japan. Hey, speaking of surveillance, you have gotta love this dude, Kenneth Starr, who's sole occupation in life was to spend money looking for the prez to screw up.

And also managing a staff to do it, with psychos sending you leads everyday, and years of failure to drag up anything. Mr. Starr would have every politician around the Czech Republic's heads on sticks, going around and around Wensceslas Square if he spent the same energy and time.

It's funny how obsessive boys can get, you can just picture little Kenny counting his baseball cards, and sorting them in new ways daily. Sometimes it seems like humans are just wired to go a certain distance down the evolutionary lane, and no further.

How could they take it all so seriously, what separates them so well?

Isn't it funny when two dogs pass each other without acknowledging the presence of the other. Maybe they're preoccupied.

What do you see when you look at those passing in the street, beauty? A sadness that is in it's own way beautiful, or perhaps just two dead sparrows? It's a little like 'russian roulette', following the moods of mass as it moves around you.

It must be comforting sitting at your breakfast table watching an empty street 10,000 miles away, and a kinship must forms for those darkened windows, that distance, for if anything should ever go wrong, hell, you're not even there. What kind of voyeur are you, a Starr-gazer?

If you had an unlimited budget to explore your most obsessive curiosity, what would you choose? "No one is safe until we are all safe", says the signs all over town and in the name of truth so many people wear a grimace. Like they know they've missed their fifteen minutes.

In the economy of time, it takes time to make it, and increasingly the existential equation is turning on its head. Once condemned to be alone, there is nary a cranny to 'watch' the trains of thought. Create jobs; hire a smart kid from a disadvantaged background to have realizations for you, and to go where you would if you didn't have to sleep.

Think about all you do to stay awake, you'd probably save some dough!
