BEN WATT Buzzin' Fly Volume III

English deejay Ben Watt knows that by digesting his influences before he gets to the decks, he's more able to spin things like London house and Detroit techno together as one. It was shocking, to say the least, when pasty DJ Ben Watt dropped a classic techno-sounding track called "Pop a Cap in Yo' Ass" on Volume II of his Buzzin' Fly collection. Sadly, no such gangsta shock gets any play on this Volume. Watt is still playing with hip-hop, as on the opening track's "spoken word" loop and later on his own "Attack Attack Attack" (featuring Philadelphia MC Baby Blak). These are tracks from unknown artists that Watt just wants you to hear, and the lush, late night dirty house makes a compelling argument for listening, even if it drags at times. For what it's worth, Watt's enthusiasm for making interesting dance music supplants any notion of being cool.
